Saturday, 30 October 2017

We woke and quickly dressed and ate breakfast and off to move furniture from the van catching up on  office work with flats and directories.  Finished by 10 am and off with the Parkers to see Chartwell, home of Winston Churchill.  This was the last weekend to see Chartwell.  The National Trust closes it down for 4 months and reopens in the spring.  Churchill bought Chartwell when he was in his early 40's.  He started painting then and painted over 500 pictures.  Some of his pictures reminded me of Grandma Skoubye's pictures.  Churchill was a keen historian, art lover, outdoor enthusiast, budding gardener, author, and politician besides Prime Minister of England voted in twice.  Impressed with his house and gardens.  We spent a few hours walking through the house the grounds.  There was a swimming pool, working garden that sells fruit and vegetables, chickens,  walking paths and a several small ponds with one larger pond by the swimming pool, and a windy small river running the length of the property.

Spent the afternoon shopping at Aldis grocery store.  Elder Wallace didn't want to go because everyone said it was a cheap place.  Our landlord, Leslie says she goes there all the time and loves that she can get great deals. It is quite a bit less on food than at Sainsbury and Tesco.  The place was packed with shoppers.  It was a smaller store and you don't have the variety like the larger grocery stores but we found everything we needed and then some.

One of our favorite part of the day was FaceTime with Dennis and Mary Kaye Doyle.  It was like old times being together.  We are so glad that Mary Kaye is doing well and looking great.  I wonder if we can play games on FaceTime with them???

A few colorful flowers left to see.

Clementine Churchill loved pastel colors.

Interesting place for flowers to grow.

  1. Got a kick out of Clark's picture seeming to be "longing" for his work with his own chickens!

I love Winston Churchill and have read many books about him and his parents...
