I wanted to tell of my experience at the Ward Christmas Party the night before. There was an investigator with his two sons who were about 14 years old. We started talking while watching the kids decorate their gingerbread houses. We had a lovely talk about God. He had studied many religious and had joined several religions but none kept his interest. He had a testimony of God but his version and my version was totally different. I told him God was a person and he said that he could wrap his head around that. His version of God was more a spirit that was out there. The sister missionaries are teaching his wife. I hope that he can find the joy that the gospel could bring him and his family.
Elder Wallace and I attended the Epsom Ward. The people are so friendly and inviting. I learned something from each speaker and lessons taught today especially a man named Robert Finon. He bore his testimony a few weeks ago telling the congregation that he hadn't felt the spirit that much. He felt it only when he was talking or giving a lesson. He had quite the experience since then. Brother Finon is an amazing man. He has had cancer and a stroke. He told us that he was putting up the Christmas decorations and become very frustrated and upset. He had given away the tree stand and he and his wife had spent over an hour trying to stabalize the tree in a live tree stand. It did not work. He was anger and upset. He believes that he was without the Holy Ghost for a short time. The next morning he was himself again and realized that the Light of Christ is with him all the time.
Sister Teri Swait asked me to say a few things about my experiences of the temple. I talked about helping fund the Jordan River Temple, working in the Draper Temple and my feelings about the spirit that abides there.
We had Elder Palmer and Elder Neuendorf over for dinner with Charlie and a friend from Liverpool named Patu. Charlie is in Crawley Institute class and we have become fast friends. Patu came to visit Charlie over the weekend. Patu is from the Congo and is about 6'5" or more. He is the nicest man. We had beef stroganoff w/rice, string beans, carrots, and fruit with cake and ice cream for dessert. We enjoyed our evening visiting. It was like a having the United Nations at the table - Germany, Canada, Congo, England, and America. Patu loves languages and knows 5 or 6, Charlie knows several languages and Elder Neuendorf knows three. It was fun to hear the different languages spoken as they talked back and forth. Patu joined the church two years ago and Charlie had joined the church 2 1/2 years ago and just came back into the church. Patu told us his conversion story. (I felt so bad I didn't get pictures.) Patu would get up early on Sunday and leave the house so he didn't have to go to church. He met the missionaries in Liverpool at the University. He was given a Book of Mormon because it interested him. His buddies said not to have anything to do with the book. The first night he read all of 1 Nephi and the second night he read all of 2 Nephi. He was challenged to come to church so he decided he would go. When he entered the church it was like he was home. It was such a wonderful feeling. He joined the church soon after.
We attended a fireside by Dominic Kent. He and his wife have only been members for 3 1/2 years and he studied the church for two years before joining. Brother Kent talked about the genealogy of the Savior. It was so interesting. He is doing is masters in Mechanical Engineering. I am impressed with his knowledge for such a short time in the church. He was a great teacher!
